ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Copperplate is a traditional script with its roots dating back centuries. The term ‘Copperplate’ is a broad term to describe scripts of English Roundhand (ERH), Engrosser’s script and its variations. The origin of the term came from the fact that handwritten scripts of ERH using flat edge quills circa 1570 - 1800 were engraved onto copper plates by a master engraver. Copperplate is a shaded script and written at a 55 degree slant angle. It is no wonder why this script is still popular centuries later; it is legible, elegant and timeless.

In this workshop, we will cover the fundamentals of Copperplate by breaking down its structure into easy to manage pieces. We will be focusing mainly on holding your pen correctly, alignment of the nib as well as analysing letters of the lowercase alphabet. These are crucial to the progress of the student. Left handed students are most welcome to join the class.

Both lowercase and uppercase alphabets will be also be provided in the worksheets but emphasis will be placed on the lowercase alphabet. A summary of the class module is as follows:

1. Introduction
2. Tools (Usage, handling and care)
3. Fundamental strokes and drills
4. Analysing letters
5. Words and spacing
